How to Consume CBD Oil

For any first timer to CBD, taking an oil tincture might seem like a bit of an odd, or perhaps even daunting concept. Fortunately, it couldn’t be simpler and after doing it once, any worries you might have will almost certainly be dispelled. After a few more successful tries, it’ll feel completely natural in no time at all. This post will outline all you’ll need to calculate your own dosages and understand varying product strengths; but first, here is a quick step-by-step for confidently taking a CBD oil tincture:

How to take a CBD oil tincture?

1. Take your pipette with your desired quantity of CBD oil.

2. With your head tilted slightly back, lift your tongue as though you’re trying to lick the roof of your mouth and gently squeeze the drops underneath the tongue.

3. Bring your tongue back down and let the CBD oil rest in your mouth for 30-60 seconds (or longer if you like) before swallowing. This process lets the CBD absorb gently and efficiently.

4. That’s all there is - it’s as simple and easy as that! If you are confident in finding your dosage and measuring out your CBD yourself, then you’re all set. If not, then no problem; keep reading, we have you covered.

How is CBD content measured?

If you’ve looked at any CBD products before, you’ll have most likely seen strength of products quoted in mg, or occasionally as a percentage of CBD concentration. The mg value simply refers to the total number of milligrams of CBD contained in the product. So, as an easy example - let’s say we find a CBD oil that is quoted as being a 10ml size and 1000mg strength. Using this ratio, we can calculate that if we wanted to take 10mg of CBD we would need to take 0.1ml of the tincture.

Luckily, it is not uncommon to be given this information from the brand selling the product, rather than having to calculate it yourself. As an example, the diagram below shows the relationship between ml and mg for Unique CBD’s Day Drops and Night Drops. If this seems a little confusing at first, we recommend giving it a go with either your own product or one you are considering just to get familiar with the mg/ml relationship.

How to work out your CBD dosage

Being able to calculate the number of mg in your product is all well and good, but what does this actually mean in relation to our dosage?

We just so happen to have written a detailed post previously about exactly this, which goes into detail about how much to take, when to take it, and other factors to consider. If you’re up for some extra reading, then that is a great place to continue your CBD journey. For now, let’s summarise how to calculate your dosage here:

Start small and work your way up

The most common approach for discerning the best day-to-day dosage for you is to start with a smaller amount, and gradually increase your mg intake over the course of a week or two. This will allow you to discover what comfortably fits your own personal routine and physiology. Try starting with 5-10mg, going about your day as usual, and increasing by the same increment each day until you feel you have reached an optimum.

Millilitre markings on pipettes can make calculating these measurements a breeze, and is definitely something that will help you be more consistent with your day-to-day usage too. If you don’t have any ml markings, most pipette sizes for tincture bottles tend to be around 1ml - but this is something you should be able to check with the product supplier with relative ease.

How much is too much?

It’s important to remember that although it is not advisable to exceed 70mg per day based on the FSA’s recommendation, you don’t need to panic if you accidentally take more than this. In fact, you would have to manage about 20,000mg in one go to reach what is considered a toxic dose, which would be next to impossible to do by accident. You can think of this like caffeine; the difference between exceeding the daily recommendation by a cup or two is incomparable to the tens of cups of coffee you’d have to consume before reaching a dangerous dose. Much like caffeine, CBD is accepted as perfectly safe when taken regularly and in moderation.

If you are currently taking any medication(s), it’s also important to discuss CBD with a medical professional beforehand. There are certain medications that will be affected by CBD so it’s best to make sure that you have had an expert opinion before introducing it into your routine.
